Today I have a tutorial finished… One that I’ve been very excited to share with you! After tweaking the pattern a couple times I’ve finally got an oven mitt I love. It is thick enough to keep your hands from getting roasted when you’re baking but not so thick that you can’t grab the dish. (I’ve made one like that before and while a layer of insul-brite and two layers of batting per side might sound nice, it’s like a straight jacket for your hand!)
Oh, and did I mention that it’s extra long so it actually protects your forearm when needed? Well, it is. Yeehaw!
I’m sure I can’t be the only one who really does not enjoy reaching waaaaaay back into the oven for one of those stubborn sideways-turned bread loaf pans or an 8″ dish that slipped back into the depths of the oven and getting a forearm burnt because the oven mitt just didn’t have what it took to protect you in that situation. No thank you.
I’ve finally mustered up the energy to make myself an oven mitt that I actually like, so here we go!

2 fat quarters of cotton fabric (one for exterior, one for interior… I use flannel on the inside)
18 x 21″ piece of cotton batting and insult-brite
All seam allowances are included in the pattern and are 1/2″
Print at 100% and check the scale box for accurate size. Cut on the dotted line and tape together. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Print out the pattern. Cut along the dotted lines and put tape the pieces together. Cut out two pieces of lining, batting and two of the insul-brite, making sure you flip the pattern so that the dots are facing up for one and facing down for the other. This will enable you to have the shiny side facing the exterior fabric and will give you the most heat resistance. (Flipping the pattern piece is not necessary for the batting, though).
Step 2: Trace the pattern on your exterior fabric and cut it out. Be aware of directional prints. If direction matters, you may need more than a fat quarter. I used about 1/3 yard (I think). Make sure you cut one piece with the dotted side of the pattern facing up and the other with the dots facing down.
Step 3: Lay a piece of batting on your table. Now, lay a piece of insult-brite, shiny side facing up, on top of the batting. Then lay the exterior fabric (right side facing up) on top of those. Your stack should look like this: (yours should be aligned)
Now lay the second piece of exterior fabric right side down on top of the stack. Then lay the second piece of insult-brite shiny side down on top, then the piece of batting. Your stack should look like this:
Pin it together and sew around the perimeter of the oven mitt. Do not sew the bottom! Use a 1/2″ seam allowance to do this.
NOTE: Next time I will make the thumb pit deeper. (Area between the thumb and the mitten part… also not a technical term, so I probably wouldn’t use that one in an Etsy listing! hehe).
Trim the excess seam allowance down to about a 1/4″. Clip at the deepest part of the thumb pit, being careful not to clip your stitches. If you accidentally do, though? It’s not a huge deal. Just go back to your machine and begin stitching about an inch before the clip, backstitching a couple times over top of the existing stitches that haven’t been clipped. As you approach the clipped section of your stitches, steer inward and around that area and then head back to existing stitches. Once you meet the stitching line again, back stitch a couple times and you’re good to go.
The bottom should look like this:
Flip the oven mitt right side out, using a pencil to poke the thumb out. (Take a deep breath, this part can be annoying!)
Step 4: Sew your interior fabric (flannel in my case) right sides together, leaving an opening for turning at the side! As you’ll see, I forgot to do this. Don’t forget to use a 1/2″ seam allowance throughout this tutorial.
Prepare for some rushed mother sewing… I almost seam ripped and redid it so it looks nicer but I know you sweet readers won’t be judging 🙂
Put the exterior piece into the lining. I put my left hand into the oven mitt and use my right hand to maneuver the lining around it. Line up the seams.
Here’s when you seam rip if you forgot to leave an opening:
Step 5: Set the oven mitt aside and cut a rectangle for the little hook. I just eyeballed it and got about a 2.5″ x 6″ piece and I like the way it came out. I’d use a ruler if I were making this to sell.
Flip it right side down, then fold the sides in to meet in the center.
Fold in half again and top stitch along each long edge. Use a longer stitch for that.
Fold it in half and place it between the exterior and the lining, at the seam that is opposite the thumb side. Keep the folded end inside the sandwich and the not sewn ends in line with the edge of the oven mitt we will be sewing. Scroll down to finished pics if this is confusing. I use wonder clips for this, but if you don’t have any I would use a long pin or two, going at different angles to hold it in place. Pin all the way around, leaving the opening for your arm to get inside (but don’t put it inside while you’re sewing!) 🙂
Step 6: Sew around the bottom of the oven mitt. You need to open it up to do this. Make sure you do not catch the opposite side underneath!
Pull the oven mitt exterior out through the opening you left (or ripped) at the side.
Flip the lining right side out and sew the opening closed.
Push the lining up into the exterior, making sure the thumb goes into the thumb space. I like to pull a little of the lining down out of the bottom like below, but you don’t have to. Top stitch around the arm opening for a finished look. (not pictured)
